I entered the USAF as a volunteer in Louisville, Kentucky in April of 1951. I went straight to Lackland AFB, in San Antonio, Texas for basic.
After this I went to Camp Gordon, near Augusta, Georgia , for Air Police school.
Sewart AFB, @ Smyrna, Tennessee was the next assignment. Here I was a part of 129th AC/W Sqdn of 154th AC/W Group. This was a Georgia National Guard unit. They were outfitting for overseas deployment. In July of 1952 we left (via Camp Kilmer New Jersey ) for Casablanca, French .Morocco. Our mode of travel was aboard the "Langfitt".
We were first assigned to Nourasseur AFB, near Casablanca, Fr. Morocco. In late August or early September I along with 40 others was assigned to and convoyed to Jnane Rhater "Site # 3" on the edge of the Western Saraha about 90 miles south of Oudja. It was 528 miles across the Atlas Mountains and south to the Site.
In December of 1952 I returned to Nouasseur. We were now the 549th AC/W Group. Site # 3 became the 735th and then the 734th Sqdn. In January of 1953 I was assigned to Site @ 5 which was now the 735th Sqdn. @ Mecra Bel Kirsi. I remained there until I returned stateside on the "Upsher". My stateside assignment was to Pinecastle AFB, Orlando, Florida. I did a TDY from there to Bermuda-Azores-RAF Station Lakenheath near Cambridge, England-Gardermeon Air Base just outside Oslo, Norway and then backtracked each place until we got back to Florida. Pinecastle later became McCoy AFB, and is now McCoy International Airport. I was discharged from the Air Force in April of 1955.
I left the Air Force as a S/SGT.
My service consisted of 4 years (minus 1 hour because of the difference in time zones @ Louisvlle and Orlando.)
